Mrežnica is a unique river with canyons, rocky barriers, and parts that look like lakes, which are common features of rivers in karst regions. Despite this, many people consider Mrežnica to be one of our most stunning rivers. The reason for this might be the around hundred waterfalls made of travertine that decorate the river throughout its length, forming a chain of connected lakes. It starts near Slunj and meets the Korana River near Karlovac, stretching for 64 kilometers. Along its route, there are 93 travertine barriers and numerous waterfalls, six of which are over six meters tall.
What makes Mrežnica special isn’t just the number of waterfalls, but also their variety. They come in different heights and shapes, and how they cross the river. The ever-changing scenery of waterfalls and elongated lakes in the lush green karst environment creates a captivating and dynamic landscape. Some say the chain of lakes resembles a net’s eyes, which might explain the river’s name – Mrežnica.
The river Mrežnica starts at the northern slopes of Popovića peak (479 m). It gushes out strongly from its source, which is now under the “Eugen Kvaternik” military training ground. This makes it hard for people to get to this part of the river.
Here, the river meets its first tributary, Suvać, and the first big waterfalls show up at Čičino most. From here, the river starts to make long barriers made of travertine that end in waterfalls. These waterfalls are maybe the most beautiful ones in Mrežnica because not many people can reach this part of the river, so they’ve stayed the way they were originally. Roncevica waterfall introduces us to a special and very interesting part of the river.
In just five kilometers from Čičina to Tržički bridge, the river goes through the narrowest part of its canyon, with 25 waterfalls. Then comes the second highest waterfall, Milkovića waterfall (8.5 m). It’s really interesting because of how the water splits and forms a long beard made of moss-covered travertine. The canyon starts to close up from here. One waterfall after another, and the last one in this series, Smoljanovića waterfall, even had a mill near it until recently.
