Vrbnik on Krk: A Tranquil Journey Through Croatian Time and Beauty

Vrbnik’s history is as rich as its landscapes. Mentioned in documents dating back to 1100, Vrbnik has witnessed centuries of culture and heritage. From the 12th to the 15th century, it thrived as a fortified settlement under the rule of the Frankopan princes of Krk. The town boasts its own municipal administration during their reign.

Like a fortress, Vrbnik was shielded by formidable walls, featuring a fortress on its eastern flank. Entry into the town was through the grand Vela and Mala vrata (doors). In times past, Vrbnik was a significant hub of Glagolitic culture, a testament to which is the 1388 Glagolitic script statute known as the “Vrbnički or Krčki statut.”

Vrbnik’s historical journey continued as it became a part of the Republic of Venice from 1480 to 1797, later transitioning under Austrian administration. The town’s architectural treasures include the Parish Church of St. Mary, a masterpiece built in the 15th/16th century, adorned with exquisite Renaissance and Baroque furnishings.

Within its walls, a polychrome wooden altarpiece of Our Lady of the Rosary graces the eyes of visitors, complete with a depiction of the Frankopan donors, Ivan VII, as tradition suggests. Adjacent to the church stands the charming Chapel of the Blessed Virgin of Childbirth (Maria Mala), dating back to 1505, home to a splendid Renaissance polyptych featuring the Virgin and Child.

Vrbnik's Timeless Charms

Legend has it that the Frankopan family, who left an indelible mark on Vrbnik, resided in two distinguished houses. Those houses were the Duke’s Palace, located on the main square, and Baća’s Palace, named after Prince Bartolo VII Baćin, one of Nikola’s sons.

For a moment of contemplation, wander to the local cemetery where the Gothic Church of St. John the Baptist, Vrbnik’s patron saint, stands proudly, dating back to the 14th century.

Women prepared dishes like šurlice or macaroni with venison or lamb sauce for celebrations.
