Weekend trip to Crikvenica, a small town with beautiful beaches

Crikvenica is one of those smaller tourist towns that, despite its popularity, has not lost the soul of a small town on the Adriatic coast. A weekend trip to Crikvanica came to mind because the desire to swim came suddenly, so there was no time to book an apartment for that weekend. Fortunately, we remembered the fantastic offer offered by the carrier Darojković.

Namely, this agency offers various trips around Croatia, but also outside it. What we were interested in this time were one-day trips departing from Zagreb, the offer of which we found very easily on their official website – every holiday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the summer months, it is possible to reserve a seat on the bus for the following weekend by phone.

The places offered by Darojković transport are Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski, Selce, Njivice and Punat. All places are extremely close to each other, so your journey to a chosen destination will vary by about 15 minutes. We decided on Crikvenica because it seemed, apart from a place with fantastic beaches, also a place where we can visit some interesting facilities (Churches, Aquarium).

Bonus information: A one-day trip to any of these places costs only 17,25 Euros.

First - swimming in the sea!

We started our journey early in the morning around 6 A.M., so we had to show up at the meeting point (across from Avene Mall) even earlier, which entailed waking up at 5 A.M. in the morning. However, it was not difficult to get up because we knew that in just a few hours we would be refreshed in the beautiful Adriatic Sea.

What we definitely have to praise are the top quality buses we rode on; the seats were extremely comfortable, we had enough space for all our things, the air conditioning in the bus was set to a temperature that suited us, and the lady who made sure everything was in its place was extremely kind and fun. On the way, we had only one longer stop, so we arrived in Crikvenica quite quickly, in just 3 hours.

The bus station in Crikvenica is located 5 minutes from the beach where we could swim, so that we immediately jumped into the sea!

I can say that there weren’t too many people around us, so we could choose where to leave our towels. Normally, we are not fans of big crowds, so the lack of them really suited us. The water temperature was pleasant, it was not too warm, so we really refreshed ourselves and stayed in the sea for about half an hour, after which we saw beautiful rocks where it was possible to sunbathe.

We remembered to bring some food too – peaches, grapes and bananas – our favorite breakfast these days!

After sunbathing and planning the rest of the day, we decided to take a bath one more time, and then go to one of the restaurants on the coast for lunch. After a short walk and looking at the options, we decided that we really wanted to eat fast food, so we sat down at a burger bar where we ordered wings with potatoes and sauce and a sandwich with fried chicken and vegetables. The amount of food served was enough to fill us up.

We paid less than HRK 100 for the meal, which we consider cheap for a restaurant located not far from the seashore. Of course, if we had decided on a more expensive restaurant, we would have paid much more, so it’s good to keep that in mind when you travel to the seaside in Croatia. However, you can always find some more acceptable options like we found.

Visit to Aquarium Crikvenica

The temperature was already quite high, so we decided that walking and sightseeing in the city was not the best option. It occurred to us that we could visit Aquarium Crikvenica, considering that we were planning to go to a similar institution anyway. The decision was made and we headed to the aquarium. The friendly receptionist sold us tickets and instructed us how to see the animals. The aquarium covers an area of about 200 m2 and contains 30 pools that are home to over a hundred species of fish from the Adriatic and about 50 specimens of tropical marine fish.

In the aquarium we could also see some freshwater fish such as piranhas, neons and discus. From the sea fish of the Adriatic, we saw shark, moray eel, grouper, halibut and animals such as lobsters, octopuses and seahorses. Tropical species that Aquarium Crikvenica provides home to are zebra, angel, clown, paleta and many others.

We were certainly most impressed by the sharks, which are exhibited in a separate part of the aquarium. Although we didn’t get too close to them, we noticed that they are magnificent animals that we are in awe of for a reason. One friend even said that she thought one of the sharks was looking at her as if he wanted to eat her…

Who knows. Maybe he wanted to.

Another fascinating specimen was certainly the moray eel, which among its patterns had one in the shape of a heart. Unfortunately, our mobile phone was not fast enough, so we could not take a photo of the heart. Among the other fish that we fondly remember are certainly the tropical ones that have words like “angel” and “surgeon” in their name.

A drink in a cafe on the riviera

After the aquarium, we went to see the small town and we have to admit that it is truly a place that, despite being known as a tourist place, has still retained its soul. We give the place a big plus because all the interesting things in the city are only a few minutes’ walk away from each other. There are two beautiful churches in this city – the Church of St. Anton and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Given that we were dressed for the beach, we didn’t have the opportunity to enter the churches, but the view from the outside was enough for us.

When we were still small, we walked around the city, and then we decided that the trip wouldn’t be complete without one drink on the riviera. We chose a cafe which at this time of day (3 in the afternoon when the sun is at its strongest) was actually almost empty. We can’t boast that we ordered some exotic drink or cocktail, but what we definitely have to mention is the view of the riviera, the sea and the boats. All in all, this was one of those coffees that really relaxes the soul and the eyes.

If by any chance you find yourself in Croatia and stay in its interior, and you long for the sea – this one-day trip will definitely be worth it.
