Lokvarsko Lake in winter gives a magnificent display of nature’s beauty. Peaceful serenity turns the area into a magical winter wonderland. Winter has finally arrived, and snow has covered many parts of Croatia. One place that gets the most snowflakes, as usual, is the lovely Gorski Kotar!
Gorski Kotar is perfect if you want an active winter trip with skiing, sledding, and other fun winter sports. It’s also great for those who enjoy easy, carefree walks in the snow, taking in the beautiful views of snow-covered slopes. If you’re in the second group, you can’t miss visiting Lokvarsko Lake this January!
Even though Lake Lokvar is man-made, it fits perfectly into the natural surroundings of the gorgeous Goranian coniferous forests. It’s a fantastic tourist spot and a favorite place for sports and recreation, especially in spring and summer. In winter, the lake transforms into a real winter fairy tale, like something from a postcard. It’s an experience you shouldn’t miss! There’s a 17 km long trail around the lake, so grab suitable clothes and shoes, and set out early. After your winter adventure, take a break at the nearby Eva restaurant, known for its delicious homemade snacks.
The lake at Lokvar was made a long time ago, between 1952 and 1955 when they stopped the Lokvarka river as part of some work activities. Around 27,000 young people took part in this. At first, they called the lake Youth Lake to honor those young people. People who lived in the Srednji Jarak area had to move away, but the buildings were not knocked down, just covered by water.
So now, underneath the surface of Lokvar Lake, you can find the remains of that old Goran town, and part of the famous Goran road called Lujzijane is also under the water.
Lokvar Lake is quite deep, around 40 meters, and it covers an area of about 2.5 square kilometers. It’s surrounded by forests with lots of tall trees. Nowadays, people from Gorski Kotar and all over Croatia love going to Lake Lokvar. It’s a popular spot for biking, and walking, and many people come here to fish. Would you believe that in 1973, someone caught the biggest river trout in the world here? It weighed a whopping 25 kilograms!
Lokvarsko Lake is a popular place, but it’s a bit tricky to find clear details about the circular path. People mention problems like not knowing where to start, confusing markings, and a trail that’s not very easy. To make sure we have the right information, we checked out the entire trail.
Figuring out where to start the trail is a common question because there’s no official starting point. This can be confusing for many hikers. Since it’s a circular path, you can start from anywhere, but choosing the right place matters. A good idea is to start at the dam where there’s easy parking. Or you can park near the swimming pool, or choose a spot above the lake, leaving your car on the road near the ‘skating rink.’ Another nice starting point is near the village of Mrzla Vodica, where there’s parking close to the closed restaurant Carov Most. Next to it, there’s a connection to the trail, and there’s also a café with a rest area by the coast, perfect for relaxing after your walk.
Where you start depends on what you want to do after the trip, and don’t worry, all the places mentioned have parking.
Now, let’s talk about the special adventure of walking around Lokvarsko Lake in winter. When everything is covered in white snow, the 17.5-kilometer trail becomes a magical journey, like a winter wonderland.
