Gospić is sitting on the western edge of a big karst area called the Lika field. It’s near Croatia’s biggest mountain, Velebit. It is a place where roads from north to south meet. Three rivers, Lika, Novčica, and Bogdanica, flow nearby. Gospić is important for business, government, religion, and culture in the Lika Senj County.
One story about how Gospić got its name is about two princesses. One named Gospava supposedly started the town, while another tale says it comes from an inn called “hospitium” built by the Capuchins of Karlovac in 1721. Another story involves a church with a statue of Mother Mary (cro. Gospa Marija) and Jesus nearby.
The name Gospić first showed up in records in 1604, but the town was already mentioned in 1574 as “Gospojina.” Gospić started growing more in the late 1700s when it became a center for the Lika regiment. It also became important for business, especially crafts and trade. Wars and other global events slowed down Gospić’s growth in the 19th and 20th centuries.
People have lived in the Gospić area since ancient times, even before written records. The first written mention of the town dates back to 1263. Gospić’s foundation includes two Turkish towers and an old bridge that helped it grow into an administrative, military, and cultural center. Gospić celebrates its City Day on July 22, which is the feast of St. Mary Magdalene.
Gospić is known as the biggest city in Croatia and serves as the hub for Lika-Senj County. It sits in Ličko polje, one of Croatia’s largest karst fields, at around 560 meters above sea level. Its large size comes from being the center of the municipality, with around 50 nearby settlements connected to it. This makes its area quite impressive, stretching over 967 square kilometers.
Apart from its size, Gospić has plenty of reasons to explore. The heart of Gospić holds its rich cultural and historical treasures, managed as protected assets. Two notable buildings are the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1783, and the Lika Museum. The museum, housed in an 18th-century building, boasts the most complete collection of Dinaric traditional culture in Croatia.
In the city center, you can’t miss the fountain and statue called ‘Marta’, crafted by Frangeš Mihanović in 1894 to mark the introduction of water supply. Marta, the Waterwoman, stands in front of the cathedral, named after the first woman to draw water from the fountain. Other notable spots include the Murkovića mill on the Novčica River, the birthplace of painter Miroslav Kraljević, and a bronze monument of Nikola Tesla in his square, standing three meters tall and weighing 1.2 tons.
Velebit Nature Park sits right by Gospić, making it a natural choice to explore when you visit the city. This mountain range is famous for its diverse wildlife, offering plenty for visitors to see and do. The park boasts 15 hiking trails, with one of the most popular routes leading from Štirovača to Šatorina, the highest peak in the middle of Velebit. From there, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea to the west and the mountains of Bosnia to the east. For those who love mountaineering, places like Aga Kuk, Čelina Kuk, and Rujičin Kuk are ideal spots for climbing, though it’s important to have experience and knowledge.
If you’re willing to venture a bit south of Gospić, you can explore the Cerovac Caves, among the most renowned in Croatia. Over 700 meters of the cave system are open for sightseeing, divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper caves. Water enthusiasts can also enjoy activities along the rivers Štikada, Ričica, and Zrmanja, including fishing, canoeing, and rafting. With numerous educational and cycling trails, exploring the lower parts of Velebit allows visitors to immerse themselves in untouched nature and fresh air.
A short distance south of Gospić lies Paklenica National Park, offering similar activities to Velebit. Hiking and climbing are popular here, with opportunities to explore the area’s cultural heritage as well. Places like Paklenički mlin, an old mill along the Velika Paklenica stream, and the Marasović Ethno-house provide insights into local traditions and lifestyles.
Near the town of Perušić, the Grabovača cave park features six caves and one pit, three of which are protected as natural monuments due to their stunning formations and rich biodiversity. Educational programs here teach visitors about the ecological importance of caves.
