And here’s the cherry on top: Plitvice Lakes National Park’s inclusion in the Travel Green List™ is no small feat. It’s been compiled by Wanderlust Travel Magazine, a top British publication renowned for promoting responsible travel for over 30 years. In 2023, the Travel Green List™ was born to shine a spotlight on destinations dedicated to responsible practices. It’s not easy to make it onto this esteemed list; it’s a testament to a sincere commitment to preserving nature and embracing sustainability. Among over 1,000 global applicants, including many impressive eco initiatives from Europe, about a hundred destinations were selected by a panel of nine sustainability experts. Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of these shining examples.
For the team managing the park, this recognition is not just an honor but also a responsibility. In a world increasingly focused on sustainable travel, being an example is more important than ever. It motivates them to continue their efforts in protecting Croatia’s natural gem and one of Europe’s most stunning parks.
George Kipouros, the editor-in-chief of Wanderlust magazine, expressed his delight at the overwhelming response from destinations applying for the Travel Green List™. He highlighted the importance of promoting destinations committed to environmental conservation and local culture, emphasizing that now is the perfect time to do so.
Plitvice Lakes National Park isn’t just beautiful; it’s also a biodiversity hotspot, as recognized by UNESCO’s 2021 research. Did you know that the park’s forests rank fourth globally in terms of how much carbon dioxide they soak up from the air? That’s pretty impressive.
But it doesn’t stop there. The park is also committed to sustainability in other ways. All the electricity used here comes from green sources, and they make sure to recycle all the plastic they use.
Another important part of being eco-friendly is supporting local communities. At Plitvice Lakes, more than 80% of the park’s employees are locals. They even organize transportation for them within a 60-kilometer radius, so they don’t need to use their cars, which helps cut down on pollution. It’s all about taking care of nature and the people who call this place home!
