There’s a perfectly good reason why you should make an effort to make friends with Croats when holidaying in Croatia. Here, you’ll learn how to do it. If you’ve been here before and had some bad experience or read about some criticism, you might be under the impression that Croats are rude and not easy to make friends with. While the first cannot be further from the truth, the second is fact. Croats don’t easily open up to outsiders.

🧑🤝🧑 How to Make Friends in Croatia: The Inner Circle
As we said in our intro article, Croats form lifelong bonds with only a handful of friends during childhood. In most cases, we are talking about 3–5 people plus some family members. Others, outside that inner circle, may or may not exist. What you want to do when in Croatia is to breach into that inner circle, because that’s where the real fun begins. Sure, you can swim, hike, and explore the Adriatic, but connecting with locals is what truly gives meaning to travel.
🍻 How to Make Friends in Bars and Rounds
So, what’s the passcode for Croats? Drink. In the local bar. Croats mostly prefer hanging out in bars while drinking beer, wine, and hard liquor. This is where the majority of bonds are made and even business deals sealed. Find yourself a local bar and stick with it. Croats prefer visiting the same bar where familiar faces gather. By day two, you’ll recognize them.
Here’s the trick: sit next to a group you find interesting, wait for a pause in their conversation, then ask a question. Avoid politics unless you are absolutely confident — Croats are very sensitive in that field. Once you get an answer, buy a round. Unlike in other countries where bills are split, Croatians “round.” Each person buys a round for the group, and it goes in circles, often lasting all day and night.
That single round takes you a step closer. Compliment the town, ask more questions, and soon you’ll likely be invited to join them. Just be ready to endure hours of drinking.
🍽️ Rules at the Table
The same rule applies at dinners. He who calls, pays. Try to split a bill and you’ll risk losing the invitation forever. Respect this unwritten rule, and you’ll move from outsider to insider. Many travelers are surprised to end up hosted like family — staying for free, being shown places not in brochures, and experiencing Croatia’s soul.
⚽ Football, Honesty, and Lifelong Bonds
To succeed, be honest, sincere, and respectful. Don’t patronize or underestimate, and you’ll make a close friend for life. Croats value genuine people who want nothing more than to share good times. And yes, remember one more thing: Croats love football more than anything. It’s often the easiest way to strike up a conversation and build trust.
📝 My Personal Note
As a Croat, I’ve always felt that the real beauty of this country isn’t just in its coastline or ancient towns, but in its people. Wherever I go — from small villages in Zagorje to seaside towns in Dalmatia — I’m welcomed with warmth, sincerity, and that special feeling of belonging.
Sharing a drink in a local bar, watching a football match together, or joining in a simple meal often turns into moments I never forget. These aren’t just casual encounters; they are connections that remind me why I’m proud to call this place home.
Every time I travel within Croatia, I find myself grateful for the friendships, the openness once you’re part of the circle, and the way people go out of their way to make you feel included. It’s this spirit that makes life here richer than any postcard view.
