Croatia is known for its crystal-clear Adriatic and countless seaside campsites, so why pick Vransko Lake?
The reasons go beyond the obvious. It’s quieter, more affordable, and offers a completely different experience. The Crkvine Camp is just located near Pakoštane, so you can swim in the sea anytime without paying high coastal accommodation prices. We even brought our bikes to explore the beaches, mixing fun with active travel.
But there’s more.
The lake is surrounded by peaceful nature, far from the summer crowds. The nearby ornithological reserve is home to many bird species, perfect for nature lovers. Outdoor activities are endless — cycling, hiking, kayaking, or even swimming in the lake. Accommodation is budget-friendly, but you’ll also find more comfortable options within the camp. Cultural and tourist spots like Pakoštane, Biograd, and Vrana’s historical sites are easy to reach for day trips. It’s a safe, family-friendly environment with space to relax, watch sunsets, and capture incredible photos.

🏕️Why Choose Vransko Lake?
Croatia is famous for its crystal-clear sea and countless seaside campsites, so why choose Vransko Lake? The reasons are simple: cost-efficiency, new experiences, and proximity to the coast. The Crkvine camp is only 20 minutes from Pakoštane, letting you swim in the sea whenever you want without paying high accommodation prices. We even took our bicycles to explore the beaches, mixing fun with active travel.
🛖 Camping Facilities
The camp offers three types of sites:
- Mobile homes for luxury camping
- Stone-walled plots with water, electricity, and drainage (our choice)
- Unfenced plots with only electricity
Hygiene is well-maintained, with clean showers, toilets, washing machines, shared refrigerators, and barbecue areas. A small supermarket offers basics, though slightly pricier than in town. Keep in mind extra costs like the tourist tax and electricity adapter rental.
🦆 Ornithological Reserve Vransko Lake
Numerous bird species — including some endangered ones — thrive here, as the entire area is protected as a Nature Park. Vransko Lake Nature Park preserves one of the last Mediterranean wetland habitats, and walking along the “Birds of Vransko Lake” educational path lets you spot more than 260 different species.
Today’s ornithological reserve covers an area of 8.83 square kilometers, which is the remnant of the former at least twice the size of the Vransko blato. (Vransko blato was a swamp that was drained back in the 18th century.) An interesting fact that we learned at the beginning of our tour of the educational trail is that as many as 60% of birds from all over Croatia live in this area during at least one part of their life cycle. Vrana Lake is especially important for the dangubi heron and the little crow, which can only nest in well-preserved wetland habitats.
The ornithological reserve does not have organized tours with guides, so you will explore the area all by yourself, and you can educate yourself by reading the boards placed on the wooden fences. What is also possible – at the information center of the Crkvine at the beginning of the tour, you can rent binoculars and a manual for bird watching, as well as an electric bicycle.
🎣 Sports Fishing
Camping on Vransko Lake is perfect for sport fishing enthusiasts. The lake is rich in fish, making it an ideal spot for anglers. Species like babushka, sunfish, gambusia, and bream can be caught without limits. Pike, catfish, carp, tench, and similar fish can also be caught, but you may only take home up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 8 kg each.
The lake is also home to eels, a strictly protected species, so fishing for them is prohibited. Fishing is allowed outside the ornithological reserve from sunrise until 11 p.m., with a valid fishing permit.
📝 My Personal Note
Vransko Lake offered us the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. I loved waking up to calm waters reflecting the morning sun. Birds, like herons and cormorants, moved quietly along the trails. The soft rustle of reeds added to the peaceful atmosphere.
Evenings were magical. The sky turned pink and gold over the lake. The reflections created a perfect mirror of the surroundings. The lake offers many activities. You can cycle to Pakoštane, walk the ornithological trails, or try sport fishing. Each visitor can find their own pace. What made it special was the balance of nature, activity, and affordability. The campsite was cozy and clean. There were no crowds, unlike at coastal towns.
Vransko Lake is perfect for families, friends, or solo travelers. It is a place to unplug, enjoy nature, and make lasting memories.
