Top 10 Things to Do on Biševo Island

Biševo, a small Adriatic gem located southwest of Vis, is renowned for its ethereal Blue Cave, tranquil beaches, and laid-back island atmosphere. Home to only a handful of residents, the island offers an unforgettable mix of natural wonders and peaceful simplicity. Whether you’re coming for the glowing caves, sandy bays, or the stillness of island life, Biševo will leave you enchanted.

Here are the top 10 things to do on Biševo Island.

💡 Top Things to Do

1. Visit the Blue Cave (Modra špilja) 🐚

The Blue Cave is Biševo’s most famous and spectacular attraction, located in Balun Bay on the island’s eastern side. Formed by wave erosion over centuries, it’s a natural wonder where sunlight enters through an underwater opening and reflects off the white limestone seabed. This creates the famous glowing blue effect, while objects beneath the surface shimmer in silver tones.

The cave is about 24 meters long, 10–12 meters deep, and up to 15 meters wide, with a ceiling reaching 15 meters at its highest point. The entrance is just 1.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide, so visitors enter in small boats, often ducking their heads as they glide inside. The magical light phenomenon is best visible between 11 AM and noon, when the sun’s angle is perfect for maximum brightness.

Swimming inside is prohibited to preserve the cave’s fragile ecosystem and ensure safety, but the experience of floating quietly inside, surrounded by surreal light and colors, is unforgettable.

✅ Tip: Arrive early in the morning to avoid peak crowds.

2. Explore the Monk Seal Cave (Medvedina) 🦭

The Monk Seal Cave on Bisevo Croatia, known locally as Medvedina špilja, is one of  most intriguing natural wonders. Stretching 160 meters into the limestone cliffs, it is the longest sea cave on the Croatian coast. The name comes from the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the rarest marine mammals in the world, which once sheltered here to rest and raise its young. The species is now critically endangered, but the cave still carries the aura of its former inhabitants.

The entrance is wide enough for small boats, and as you glide inside, daylight gradually fades, replaced by a mystical half-light reflected off the stone walls. At the far end lies a small, hidden pebble beach—once a secluded refuge for the seals—that can only be reached from the sea. The cave’s interior is peaceful, with the gentle sound of waves echoing off the high walls, creating a natural amphitheater of sound.

✅ Tip: Accessible only by small vessels, so plan with a local guide.

3. Hike to Stražbenica Peak ⛰️

For sweeping island views, hike to Stražbenica, Biševo’s highest point at 239 m. The trail takes around 45 minutes and offers breathtaking panoramas of the sea, surrounding islands, and rugged coastline.

From the summit, the panorama is nothing short of spectacular—stretching across the deep blue sea to nearby Vis, Komiža, Svetac, and even the distant outlines of Hvar and Korčula on clear days. The rugged coastline of Biševo reveals its hidden coves and cliffs from above, offering a completely different perspective from the sea-level views. This spot is especially magical at sunrise or sunset, when the light paints the water and islands in shades of gold and pink, making it a dream location for photographers and nature lovers alike.

✅ Tip: Wear good shoes and bring water, especially in summer.

4. Porat and Salbunara Beaches - Best Sandy Bays on Biševo Island 🏖️

These quiet sandy coves on Biševo’s western side are a rare treat in Dalmatia, where most beaches are pebbly or rocky. Porat and the smaller Salbunara lie sheltered from strong winds, making their turquoise waters calm and perfect for swimming. The soft sand underfoot and gradual entry into the sea make them ideal for families, while the surrounding pine trees provide natural shade for those looking to escape the midday sun.

Porat is the more popular of the two, with a small seasonal konoba serving fresh fish, simple Dalmatian dishes, and cold drinks. Salbunara, just a short walk away, feels more secluded and is perfect for those who want a quieter spot to spread their towel and listen to the gentle waves. Both beaches are reached either by boat from Komiža or by a short walk from the main docking point on the island.

✅ Tip: Bring snacks and drinks, as there are no shops nearby.

5. Take a Boat Tour from Vis or Split 🚤

Many tours from Vis, Komiža, Hvar, and Split include the Blue Cave plus other hidden bays and sights around Biševo. It’s the easiest way to explore multiple spots in a day.

✅ Tip: Choose a smaller group tour for a more personal experience.

6. Go Birdwatching 🐦

Biševo is part of a protected Important Bird Area, home to shearwaters, falcons, and other seabirds. The cliffs and remote coves are perfect for spotting wildlife, especially during the breeding season in spring and early summer. Shearwaters can often be seen gliding effortlessly over the waves, while Eleonora’s falcons nest in the steep rock faces, diving at high speed in search of prey. The island’s low human impact and untouched coastline provide an ideal habitat for these species, making it a rewarding destination for nature photographers and bird enthusiasts alike.

✅ Tip: Early morning is best for birdwatching.

7. Enjoy the Island’s Peace and Simplicity 🌿

With no cars, no shops, and no rush, Biševo is the ultimate escape from modern noise. It’s a place to slow down, breathe the sea air, and live by the sun.

✅ Tip: Carry cash, as there are no ATMs.

8. Kayak Along the Coast 🛶

Paddle past cliffs, through small caves, and into hidden coves for a unique view of the island. It’s a mix of adventure and tranquility.

✅ Tip: The sea is calmest in the morning.

9. Discover Local Flora and Stone Landscapes 🌸

The island’s limestone terrain is dotted with pines, wild herbs, and Mediterranean shrubs. Walking the trails is as much about the scents as the views, with the air often carrying the aroma of rosemary, sage, and wild thyme. In spring, the landscape comes alive with colorful wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees that thrive in this untouched environment. The traditional stone walls and terraces, built by islanders over generations, tell stories of a time when agriculture played a larger role in Biševo’s life. Combined with the rugged cliffs and shimmering sea in the background, these details make every walk feel like a step back into a simpler, slower-paced world.

✅ Tip: Spring is especially beautiful for wildflowers.

10. Combine Biševo with Surrounding Islands ⚓

Extend your trip with a visit to Vis, Komiža, or Stiniva Bay. Each has its own charm, from historic harbors to secluded beaches.

✅ Tip: Public boats connect Biševo with Komiža daily in summer.

The Dalmatian coast around Vis is ideal for kayaking or boat trips, with hidden sea caves, pristine bays, and waters so clear you can see the seabed several meters below.
