Beaches in Dubrovnik are only one of the reasons why this city is visited by millions of tourists every year. Given that warmer weather is approaching and it’s time to start thinking about summer vacation (while you still have time to book the best hotels and apartments), we bring you a few fantastic Dubrovnik beaches that you should visit. A surprise awaits you – some of the beaches are not in the city itself – but all the better because we will give you an idea for a trip to places near Dubrovnik!
Dubrovnik, the area around the city and the beaches in Dubrovnik are places to which we are always happy to return again and again. When you have friends there – you won’t miss a tour of the surrounding places that will delight you with nature – Konavle (which consists of numerous picturesque villages), Župa Dubrovačka, irresistible Cavtat, Trsteno (there is also an arboretum that you may have heard of) and the small island of Lokrum which is associated with different legends.
The wonderful Konavle, which we enjoy walking every year when we stay at the house of our friends (who treat us only to the best local food), often makes us think that life would be much nicer if we could settle in a place like this forever. Big cities and their concrete buildings always seem so distant and cold to us. We would recommend this part of Dubrovnik to anyone who likes peace and beauty, somewhat like Robinson Crusoe. In Konavle, you will always discover something new, see something unusual and realize that there is a completely different life than that in a big city.
Also, while walking around Konavle, we realized that there is no shortage of luxury accommodation here, as well as accommodation that would be ideal for celebrating bachelor and bachelorette parties – as well as the wedding itself!
The numerous apartments and villas that we found are actually quite separated from each other, so you wouldn’t really have the feeling that you are in a tourist area. This is another big plus for us. Okay, what we have to mention is certainly the fact that there isn’t much night life for tourists in the Konavle villages, so club lovers will have to go to Dubrovnik if that’s what they’re interested in. Konavle is a place that will be most appreciated by hikers, walkers, lovers of nature, active vacationists, and families with children.
Although we visited numerous beaches in Dubrovnik, Konavle (many of which are actually hidden and intended only for locals and their guests), we will single out the one they call the “Instagram beach” – we are, of course, talking about Pasjača in Popovići. It is a pebble beach that is hidden under orange rocks that provide shade. This beach can only be reached by going down a number of stairs, since the last place you can reach by car is a large wild parking area on top of the rocks.
The beach itself is considered, due to its privacy, one of the most romantic and beautiful beaches in Konavle. But we will offer you a different view – we were even more impressed by the view of the sea and the rocks that you have the opportunity to see as you descend towards the beach. The magical view truly takes our breath away every year and we feel as if we are on top of the world. As you descend towards the pasture and see everything unfolding before you, you will simply have to stop, look and take photos. Hence, of course, the name “Instagram beach”.
Trsteno is one of those places that you will want to return to every year once you visit it. Trsteno beach is a public place that is described as an ideal bathing place for children, since the water is not too deep, the bottom is sandy, and on the beach you can rent deck chairs and similar props that will make your stay more pleasant. If you are a fan of jet skis and similar activities – you will not be disappointed. However, what we are very happy to visit when we come to Trsteno is certainly the oldest Croatian arboretum, which is located right here.
This arboretum, protected as a monument of garden culture, is not only the oldest in Croatia, but also one of the oldest arboretums in the whole world. This is certainly supported by the well-preserved summer house dating back to the 15th century.
In this place, you will see a multitude of preserved plants that grow more and more each year, and among them, you will surely be most enchanted by two plane trees, which are known to be around 600 years old. You can easily reach this magical place even if you didn’t come to Dubrovnik by car, because there is a bus line from the city to Trsteno that will take you to your destination in just twenty minutes.
One of the unmissable beaches in Dubrovnik is certainly Buža (“hole” in the Dubrovnik dialect), which is located right at the foot of the Dubrovnik walls. A fantastic view, wouldn’t you agree?
Are you staying in the city itself and don’t feel like visiting the surrounding areas to find the ideal beach? You don’t even have to, because Buža will offer you everything you are interested in. The beach can be reached by passing through the gate of St. Stjepan in the southern part of the walls, and the beach itself is rocky. We would not recommend it to sand lovers, but all those who prefer stone will find this beach a real hit. Its great advantage, of course, is the fact that you can bathe in the sea and then in 10 minutes get dressed and jump to the best restaurants and museums. As the only drawback of this beach, we would mention the crowds in the season, but if you came to Dubrovnik in July or August, then you simply cannot avoid it.
One of the places near Dubrovnik that you will probably hear about the most is Župa Dubrovačka. It is slightly larger than other places around the city, so it is not surprising that most tourists go here on a one-day trip. The parish will win you over with its irresistible beaches and offer of promenades and restaurants, and if you need shopping – there is also a smaller shopping center. The beach that we would single out is the Kupari beach, which was once part of a military resort. Above the beach there are abandoned and devastated hotels, and on the beach itself is the villa of Yugoslav President Tito. There is a coffee bar on the beach and sunbeds can be rented, but what most attracts tourists is certainly its past and the view of the mysterious villa. What will certainly interest pet owners is the fact that the westernmost part of the beach in Kupari turns into a paradise for animals when there are no bathers. In spring and autumn, the whole beach has a “dog-friendly” atmosphere.
These are two idyllic places near Dubrovnik whose beaches you simply have to see. If romance is something you can’t live without – these are the places for you!
The island of Lokrum hides an irresistible beach that you should not miss, and it is the beach around the lake called “Dead Sea”. The lake is not particularly large, and is only 10 meters deep. The water is clean and quite warm, so you will feel like you are in a wellness facility. Our favorite place to relax? Definitely this beach!
Besides swimming in the lake, there are other great possibilities:
Cavtat is a place that many call the jewel of the Dubrovnik area. How could you not, when everything in this charming town is absolutely perfect – from several colorful beaches, through cute cafes and restaurants, a museum, an old cemetery with a mausoleum to the view from the hill on which the cemetery is located. If you want to see one of the most beautiful sunsets, Cavtat is the place for you.
Beaches in Dubrovnik are places that will delight just about anyone, and considering that there is so much to choose from, we believe that you will definitely find something that will suit your personal affinities. If, by any chance, you are not sure what you would like to see and what you could see, contact us so that we can create a travel program for you!
