The Croatian Geological Society spearheaded this comprehensive research effort, encompassing on-site surveys, the identification of pivotal lithostratigraphic and structural sites, and in-depth examinations of the hydrogeological and limnogeological characteristics of the selected features. The culmination of these endeavors manifested in the publication titled “Imotska jezera” in 2019. This publication served as the inaugural stride in laying the groundwork for a forthcoming application to secure UNESCO Global GeoPark recognition for the area.

Crucially, this undertaking was made possible through the financial backing of the local municipal authorities and the support of the Imotski Tourist Board. By 2019, the Imotski Lakes Geopark Association had been established, assuming the mantle of leadership, operational responsibilities, and coordination in the ongoing preparations for the application. In 2020, with the valuable backing of the National Commission for UNESCO Geoparks within the Republic of Croatia, a collaborative application was submitted in tandem with the Biokovo Nature Park
