Planning a trip to Rab? Here’s your essential guide—covering how to get there, where to stay, practical tips for getting around, tours, mobile internet, and more. Save this page for a stress-free visit to Croatia’s “Happy Island.”
Let’s dive into the essentials you need for your trip to Rab with our Travel Resource for Rab.
Rab is well-connected despite being an island. You can reach the island with Jadrolinija, Croatia’s main ferry company, which operates regular connections between the mainland and Rab. Ferries from the mainland (Stinica–Mišnjak) run year-round and take just 15 minutes, offering quick access for cars and foot passengers. In summer, additional catamaran lines connect Rab Town with Rijeka, Krk, Pag, and other coastal cities. Travelers coming by car from Zagreb or Split can reach the ferry terminal at Stinica in 3–4 hours.
Rab does not have its own airport. The closest options are Rijeka Airport (on Krk Island), about 2 hours away, and Zadar Airport, about 3 hours away by car. Both offer seasonal international connections and domestic flights to Zagreb. From there, car rentals, shuttles, and buses can bring you to the ferry terminal for Rab.
Accommodation in Rab ranges from family-run guesthouses and apartments in Rab Town to luxury hotels and resorts along the coast. The Lopar Peninsula is popular with families thanks to its sandy beaches and large campsites. For travelers who enjoy nature, camping parks such as San Marino in Lopar or smaller boutique camping resorts along the coast provide excellent seaside options. Booking early is recommended in July and August, when Rab’s festivals and beaches attract the most visitors.
Having a car is the most flexible way to explore Rab’s varied landscapes—sandy coves in Lopar, pine forests near Supetarska Draga, and remote beaches around Kampor and Kalifront Peninsula. Car rentals are available on the island and at nearby airports. For travelers without a car, taxis and local buses connect main towns and beaches, while hotel transfers can often be arranged.
Guided walking tours of Rab Town bring the island’s medieval past to life with stories about the four bell towers, old city walls, and Rab cake tradition. Outdoor lovers can join kayaking tours, cycling routes, or boat trips to hidden coves and nearby islands. Seasonal experiences include the famous Rapska Fjera festival in July, olive grove tours in Lun, and glow-night kayaking under the stars.
Staying connected on Rab is simple. Prepaid SIM cards from Croatian providers (A1, Telemach, Hrvatski Telekom) are available at kiosks, supermarkets, and mobile shops in Rab Town. eSIM services like Airalo are also available for instant activation. Coverage is reliable across the island, even in more remote bays.
Travel insurance is highly recommended when visiting Rab. It should cover medical care, trip cancellations, and luggage protection. If you plan to explore neighboring islands or combine Rab with mainland trips, make sure your plan includes regional coverage.
