Since the 17th century, shipbuilding has been Mali Lošinj’s money-maker. But wait, here comes a plot twist! The steam engine showed up, things slowed down, and then there was that downy mildew disaster – which led folks to pack their bags.
Now, here’s where the fun begins. Mali Lošinj isn’t just about its past. It’s got two rad museums, a cinema smack dab in the heart of the town. In the summer, you can catch flicks under the stars at a summer cinema, which totally grooves with the famous jazz festival during the sunny season. Cool, right?
Imagine this: In 1999, deep in the azure waters near Lošinj, an ancient bronze statue of a Greek athlete named Apoxyomenes was discovered. This incredible find, a towering 192-centimeter-tall sculpture, had been resting for over two thousand years. The statue portrays a young athlete who has just completed his bout or exercise. He is in a moment of relaxation, when he is totally intent on cleaning his body of oil, sweat and dust (Gr. apoxyesis), and thus it is called the Apoxyomenos. It caused a global stir and became a sensation across the world. The Croatian Apoxyomenes is one of only seven such exceptionally well-preserved statues worldwide.
After an extensive makeover, this aquatic treasure made its grand return to Mali Lošinj, taking up residence in the “Kvarner Palace” area. Today, you can hang out with this ancient sports star every day from Tuesday to Sunday between 08:00 and 17:00. It’s like meeting a true legend of the past right by the beach!
