Sustainability Beyond Buzzwords: NP Plitvice Commitment to Green Destinations

Today, sustainability is a buzzword, but what truly sets a destination apart is the tangible commitment to green practices. Travelers increasingly seek destinations that align with their values, places where nature is preserved, and local communities thrive. Plitvice Lakes National Park embodies these ideals, offering travelers an eco-friendly haven

The Green Destinations certification process is a rigorous evaluation of 84 criteria across four dimensions of sustainability: social, environmental, economic, and cultural. In Croatia, alongside Plitvice Lakes National Park, Međimurje County and the city of Mali Lošinj have successfully undergone this process. These destinations not only demonstrated their responsible practices but also received invaluable tools for continuous improvement over the next two years.

The journey towards the Green Destinations certification has been long and demanding, a testament to the dedication of all stakeholders involved. We are immensely proud to have completed this journey and showcased that, through a commitment to sustainability and the collaborative effort of our partners, we can create a destination that is not only responsible for us but also for future generations,” said Tomislav Kovačević, Director of the Public Institution “National Park Plitvice Lakes.”

The World Days of Green Destinations conference, a global gathering of sustainability experts, offered a platform for over 260 delegates to engage in discussions on climate change, public-private sector partnerships, destination management, and practical sustainability solutions. The conference emphasized the significance of strengthening local culture, enhancing the guest experience, and promoting the values of sustainability, aligning perfectly with Plitvice Lakes National Park’s mission.
